Soda bread
450g wholemeal flour
50g oats
1 teaspoon bicarb
1 tablespoon brown sugar or honey
1 tablespoon black treacle
( sometimes use 2 tablespoons dark mucovada sugar in place of sugar and treacle)
450ml buttermilk or milk with 1 tablespoon lemon juice
Mix dry ingredients. Add treacle to milk and stir to dissolve. Make a well in the middle of the flour mix and stir in the milk to make a sticky dough.
Drop onto a greased baking tray and shape to a loaf. Make a deep cross in the top
Bake for about 50mins at 200
Cook until it sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom. If it is not quite done turn over and bake for a few more minutes
You can brush with melted butter when if comes out of the oven if liked
In the Aga cook in top oven. Cooks a bit quicker
